With $1,000 on the line, Justin Mondeik of Gleason, Wisconsin came from the back of the pack to capture the late model feature at Norway Speedway on Friday, August 5th.
Werner Electric Supply night means a big day will be waiting for the first late model driver under the checker, and for the first half of the race it looked like it might be Cory Cootware. Cootware grabbed the lead at the drop of the green from fellow front row starter Bruce White. White clung to second until the 14th lap when Jason Well, shooting for his second straight win, got by. Tagging along were Braison Bennett and Mondeik, The trio raced for position and began the pursuit of Cootware at the same time. As they closed in, Mondeik passed into second on the 19th lap of the 50 lap headliner. Seven laps later he closed in on the bumper of the leader.
Cootware was able to hang on to the point for three laps until Mondeik powered by on the outside. What looked like a guaranteed win paused for a bit thanks to a late caution with eight to go. Wells and Cootware tangled up with a lapped car, with both getting their spots back for the final laps.
Following a good restart, Mondeik raced away to his sixth feature win of the season. Wells finished one spot short of a second straight win, beating Bennett at the line for the runner-up position. Wyatt Spade snared fourth with a last lap pass of Cootware.
The super stocks ran in memory of Don Anderson, with an additional $500 on the line in their main event. A tight battle at the front came down to a two lap shootout. Kevin Peterson withstood pressure from several cars to win his fourth feature of the year. Point leader Anthony Schieflebein advanced late in the contest for second, Trevor Pankratz rebounded from a lap 26 incident to place third and Nick Anderson, sporting a look-a-like paint scheme of his dad Don’s car, ran a solid fourth.
Travis Hulsizer held off teammate and point leader Joe Ostermann to win his first feature in the stock car division.
Elliot Reid took the lead from Cory Grondine on the 13 lap on the way to his second straight win in the four cylinder class.
Racing resumes next Friday night August 12, featuring Auto Value Round 2. Qualifying for all four divisions is at 5:30, with racing to follow at 7 p.m. The night will also feature the induction of the 2022 class into the Norway Hall of Fame: Bruce White, Ed Hedlund, Red Adair, Dale Peterson and Mike Mattson.
